The largest country in Scandinavia, Sweden is home to snow-capped peaks, deep green forests and the longest uninterrupted land border in Europe. Sandwiched between Norway and Finland, it lies to the west of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia and enjoys a well-founded reputation for liberal attitudes and a refreshingly relaxed outlook on life. Twice the size of the UK, with a population of just under 10 million, it offers up plenty of space and freedom and some of the most serene and isolated environments left anywhere on the planet.
Blessed with a rich cultural smorgasbord, its engaging coastal communities and chic cities provide a captivating gateway into Europe’s last great wilderness, where the traditions of the indigenous Sámi and their huge herds of reindeer still hold sway. Ideal landscapes for exploring by snowmobile and skis, this is where the dazzling displays of the Aurora Borealis, remote wilderness cabins and unique ice hotels provide some of the most unforgettable experiences imaginable.
Enjoy the Northern Lights from the Sky Station at the summit of Mount Nuolja, take a snowmobile safari across the frozen lakes and stay at the iconic Tree Hotel beside the serene Lule River. A trip to Kiruna also provides an opportunity to stay in the famous Icehotel and enjoy the annual Snow Games, whilst a stay in the remote northern community of Kangos offers a chance to get about as far away from the outside world as you can go.
