Chilcabamba Lodge, Cotopaxi National Park

Chilcabamba Lodge

Excellent standards without the big price tag

Our rating: Premium | Property style: Lodge

An absolutely charming Andean lodge surrounded by Ecuadorian páramo around six kilometres outside the Cotopaxi National Park, a stay at the authentically warm and inviting Chilcabamba Lodge is worth it for anyone wanting to explore the area. The rustic lodging features all the creature comforts you could need at 3,480 metres above sea level including cosy, heated rooms and homely restaurant serving hearty meals. Birdwatching, mountain biking and horse-riding excursions can be organised whilst here as well as trails starting within proximity to the lodge against a backdrop of snow-covered volcanic peaks. The style of the property draws on colonial aspects of tiled flooring and wood-beamed ceilings but is also distinctly Andean with thatched rooves and quaint furniture mixing local charm with contemporary style and exposed brick.

San Agustin De Callo Hacienda, Cotopaxi National Park

Luxury, history and nature meet at the 16th century colonial hacienda of San Agustin de Callo; a charming property located one and a half hours south of Quito. This beautiful lodge is built on the site of an old Inca palace offering an unrivalled glimpse into Ecuador's rich and colourful past. Famed German explorer Alexander von Humboldt was said to have once used this ranch as a base to study the Andean highlands. The working farm has 11 rooms and suites, spread out over three buildings which are elegant, cosy and all individually decorated. There is an onsite restaurant serving typical Andean dishes. Overall this is a great base for your excursions into the stunning Cotopaxi National Park and additional activities, such as horse-riding in the high Andes, can be arranged by the lodge with notice for your free time.

Hacienda El Porvenir, Cotopaxi National Park

On the gentle slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano, in a truly privileged position, Hacienda El Porvenir is the ideal spot from which to explore the Cotopaxi National Park and to get to know the Andean way of life at first hand. The laid-back farmhouse is just one and a half hours from Quito by car and only four km from the northern entrance to the national park. Located at 3,600 m and surrounded by four volcanoes, guests can enjoy stunning views but must bear in mind that the altitude can make it cold throughout the year. With a capacity for just 42 guests, staff do their utmost to make your stay as welcoming and personalised as possible, in true rural Andean fashion. Rooms are kept warm and cosy with a simple, homely style; the lodge also has a lounge with a fireplace and indoor jacuzzies. There are just nine rooms with en-suite bathrooms which we use for our guests. The lodge has a restaurant serving traditional home cooked meals and activities can be arranged via the staff such as trekking and horseback riding. Being a working ranch, they also offer authentic Ecuadorian cowboy experiences for a glimpse into their everyday lives.
