Arrive in Ushuaia today and be transferred to your hotel on the hills just outside of town. Enjoy the view from the jacuzzi. Or go to the optional evening briefing to ask questions and meet your fellow passengers.

Enjoy a free morning in Ushuaia where you can explore the town or the surrounding countryside. Embarkation on the Island Sky begins in the afternoon at the port in Ushuaia. As the ship departs you will have a welcome briefing and orientation before the Captain's welcome dinner. Your first signs of wildlife may be Magellanic penguin, Rock cormorant and Sea lion colonies. Tonight, you’ll cruise through the Beagle Channel towards the open waters of Drake Passage and the vast Southern Ocean.

DAY 3: AT SEA

As we journey further south, lectures will be given from marine mammal experts and the expedition team. Those interested in citizen science can take part in sea bird sighting surveys or help collect salinity samples and weather data along the way. We will keep an especially keen watch for pelagic whales as we approach the nutrient rich upwelling areas of the Continental Shelf.

There will be daily lectures on board from polar experts and keep an eye out for any first sightings of whales.

DAY 5: SOUTH SHETLANDS

DAY 5: SOUTH SHETLANDS

Depending on weather conditions, we should arrive at the South Shetlands this morning. The itinerary will be flexible and designed by the Expedition Leader, Captain, and Marine Mammal experts to maximize whale watching opportunities, stopping at penguin rookeries, seal wallows, bird colonies and whale feeding areas, as well as sites of historic and scientific interest. We may visit the mountainous Half Moon Island or glaciated Livingston Island. Or perhaps we will sail the ship into an active volcano with an opportunity to take a dip in the relatively balmy waters that surround Deception Island. We hope to reach Bransfield Strait, once the site of an abandoned whaling station, for an excellent chance to see whales.

A further day to encounter the unique wildlife and spectacular landscapes of the Great White Continent.

DAY 8: GRELACHE STRAIT

Heading further south, we will reach the Gerlache Strait to explore its surrounding channels and islands. Wilhelmina Bay is favored by humpback whales but we may also see the picturesque Neko Harbor, sheltered Paradise Harbor, the striking Lemaire Channel, the wildlife-filled Penola Channel, or the majestic Neumayer Channel. We may stop at an active scientific base and a historic base. Apart from whales, these waters also play host to marine mammals like Weddell seals, Crabeater seals, Orca, Elephant seals, Leopard Seals, Minke Whale and the assertive Antarctic Fur Seal.

Keep an eye out from the observation deck for some last-minute whale sightings as you head back towards the port of Ushuaia and the end of this incredible adventure. Your expert team will present wildlife sightings and special slideshows as you sail North, heading again across the Antarctic Convergence and the Drake Passage.
